Ingredients

  • 2 cups whole milk
  • 1/2 cup granulated sugar
  • 4 large egg yolks
Doughnut Ingredients
  • As needed doughnut recipe of your choice Can be fried or baked.
Optional Toppings
  • To taste powdered sugar For dusting.
  • To taste chocolate glaze For a traditional Boston cream flavor.

Method
 

Making the Custard
  1. In a saucepan, heat the milk until it's steaming.
  2. In a separate bowl, whisk together the granulated sugar and egg yolks until well combined.
  3. Slowly pour the hot milk into the egg mixture, whisking constantly to temper the eggs.
  4. Return the mixture to the saucepan and cook over medium heat, stirring constantly, until it thickens (about 5-10 minutes).
  5. Remove from heat and let cool.
Preparing the Doughnuts
  1. Prepare the doughnuts according to your preferred recipe.
  2. Once the doughnuts are cooled, fill them with the custard using a piping bag.
Serving the Doughnuts
  1. Serve the doughnuts warm or at room temperature.
  2. Dust with powdered sugar for a lovely finish.
  3. Pair with milk or coffee for a delightful treat.

Notes

Make sure to whisk the egg yolks and sugar well for a smooth custard. Use a piping bag with a thin tip for even filling. For a richer custard, add a dash of vanilla extract or salt. Allow doughnuts to cool completely before filling to avoid melting the custard.
