TggTHE CLASSIC PANDESAL

Pandesal is a popular Filipino bread roll that’s soft, slightly sweet, and perfect for breakfast or snacks. It has a light, fluffy texture and a golden crust, often coated in breadcrumbs. Here’s a classic recipe to try:

Ingredients:

  • 4 cups all-purpose flour (or bread flour for a chewier texture)
  • 1 packet (2 1/4 tsp) active dry yeast
  • 1 cup warm milk (or water)
  • 1/4 cup sugar
  • 1 tsp salt
  • 1/4 cup vegetable oil (or melted butter)
  • 1 egg
  • 1/2 cup breadcrumbs (for coating)

Instructions:

  1. Activate the yeast: In a small bowl, dissolve yeast and 1 tbsp sugar in warm milk. Let it sit for 5–10 minutes until foamy.
  2. Mix the dough: In a large bowl, combine flour, sugar, and salt. Add the yeast mixture, oil, and egg. Mix until a dough forms.
  3. Knead: Transfer the dough to a floured surface and knead for about 10 minutes until smooth and elastic.
  4. First rise: Place the dough in a greased bowl, cover with a towel, and let it rise for 1–2 hours, or until doubled in size.
  5. Shape the rolls: Punch down the dough and divide it into 12–16 equal pieces. Shape each into an oval and roll in breadcrumbs.
  6. Second rise: Arrange on a baking sheet, cover, and let them rise for another 30–45 minutes.
  7. Bake: Preheat the oven to 350°F (175°C) and bake for 15–20 minutes until golden brown.
  8. Serve: Enjoy warm, plain, or with butter, cheese, or jam.

Would you like any modifications, like making it softer or a bit sweeter?
