Why shouldn’t you pour hot water into the sink

Pouring hot water down the sink can be risky for several reasons, depending on your plumbing system. Here’s why you might want to avoid it:

1. Can Damage Pipes

If you have PVC pipes, extremely hot water (especially boiling water) can soften or warp them over time.

Older metal pipes can also expand and contract, potentially leading to leaks.

2. May Cause Grease Buildup

If there’s grease or oil in your pipes, hot water can temporarily melt it, allowing it to flow further down.

As the water cools, the grease solidifies, creating stubborn clogs deeper in the plumbing.

3. Can Crack Porcelain Sinks

Pouring boiling water directly into a cold porcelain sink (like after washing ice-cold dishes) can cause thermal shock, leading to cracks.

What to Do Instead?

✔ Let hot liquids cool slightly before draining.

✔ If dealing with grease, wipe it with a paper towel and discard it in the trash.

✔ Use a drain strainer to prevent food and debris from causing clogs.
