fried dough balls

Here’s a simple and delicious recipe for making these fried dough balls (similar to Moroccan sfenj, African puff-puff, or French beignets).

Ingredients:

  • 2 cups all-purpose flour
  • 1/4 cup sugar
  • 1 teaspoon baking powder
  • 1/2 teaspoon salt
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract (optional)
  • 2 eggs
  • 1/2 cup milk (or water)
  • 2 tablespoons butter (melted)
  • Oil for frying
  • Sugar or cinnamon sugar for coating (optional)

Instructions:

  1. Prepare the Batter:

    • In a bowl, mix the flour, sugar, baking powder, and salt.
    • In another bowl, whisk the eggs, milk, vanilla, and melted butter.
    • Gradually add the wet ingredients to the dry ingredients, mixing until you get a smooth, thick batter.
  2. Heat the Oil:

    • Heat oil in a deep pan over medium heat. The oil should be around 350°F (175°C).
  3. Fry the Dough Balls:

    • Using a spoon or your hands, scoop small portions of the batter and drop them into the hot oil.
    • Fry until golden brown, turning them occasionally for even cooking.
  4. Drain and Coat:

    • Remove the fried dough balls and place them on paper towels to drain excess oil.
    • While still warm, roll them in sugar or cinnamon sugar if desired.
  5. Serve:

    • Enjoy them warm with tea, coffee, or a drizzle of honey!
