Decadent Chocolate Layer Cake Recipe

Ingredients
For the Cake:
- 2 cups all-purpose flour
- 1 ¾ cups granulated sugar
- ¾ cup unsweetened cocoa powder
- 2 teaspoons baking soda
- 1 teaspoon baking powder
- 1 teaspoon salt
- 2 large eggs
- 1 cup buttermilk
- ½ cup vegetable oil
- 2 teaspoons vanilla extract
- 1 cup hot coffee (or hot water)
For the Chocolate Frosting:
- 1 cup unsalted butter (softened)
- 3 ½ cups powdered sugar
- ¾ cup unsweetened cocoa powder
- ½ cup heavy cream (more if needed)
- 2 teaspoons vanilla extract
- A pinch of salt
Instructions
Step 1: Prepare the Cake Batter
- Preheat oven to 350°F (175°C). Grease and line two 9-inch cake pans with parchment paper.
- In a large bowl, whisk together flour, sugar, cocoa powder, baking soda, baking powder, and salt.
- Add eggs, buttermilk, oil, and vanilla. Beat until combined.
- Slowly mix in hot coffee (batter will be thin, but that’s okay!).
Step 2: Bake the Cake
- Divide the batter evenly between the pans.
- Bake for 30-35 minutes or until a toothpick inserted in the center comes out clean.
- Let the cakes cool in the pans for 10 minutes, then transfer to a wire rack to cool completely.
Step 3: Make the Frosting
- Beat the butter in a large bowl until creamy.
- Add cocoa powder and powdered sugar, mixing slowly.
- Pour in heavy cream, vanilla, and salt, and beat until smooth and fluffy.
Step 4: Assemble the Cake
- Place one cake layer on a serving plate. Spread frosting over the top.
- Add the second layer and cover the entire cake with frosting.
- Smooth out the frosting and decorate as desired.
