Amish White Bread Recipe
This soft, slightly sweet, homemade Amish white bread is perfect for sandwiches or toast!
Ingredients:
- 2 cups (475ml) warm water (about 43°C / 110°F)
- ⅔ cup (135g) granulated sugar
- 1 ½ tablespoons (14g) active dry yeast
- ¼ cup (60ml) vegetable oil or melted butter
- 1 ½ teaspoons salt
- 6 cups (750g) all-purpose flour
Instructions:
Step 1: Activate the Yeast
- In a large bowl, mix warm water and sugar. Stir until dissolved.
- Sprinkle the yeast on top and let it sit for 5–10 minutes until foamy.
Step 2: Make the Dough
- Add oil and salt to the yeast mixture.
- Gradually mix in flour, 1 cup at a time, until the dough forms.
- Knead the dough on a floured surface for 8–10 minutes until smooth and elastic.
Step 3: First Rise
- Place the dough in a greased bowl, cover with a damp cloth, and let it rise in a warm place for 1 hour (until doubled in size).
Step 4: Shape the Bread
- Punch down the dough and divide it into two equal parts.
- Shape each part into a loaf and place in greased 9x5-inch loaf pans.
- Cover and let rise for 30–40 minutes.
Step 5: Bake
- Preheat oven to 175°C (350°F).
- Bake for 25–30 minutes until golden brown.
- Brush the tops with butter for a soft crust (optional).
Step 6: Cool & Enjoy
- Let the bread cool before slicing. Enjoy fresh or toasted!
